Allure Chocolat, Cartagena

The classic façade of this hotel blends in with the surrounding city center  ust outside the walled city is a fantastic option for those seeking a more modern take on what Colombia has to offer up on this side of town. Featuring modern accommodations with high ceilings and large windows that give you fantastic views of the water, if you happen to be on that side of the hotel.  Regardless of which way your room is facing, take the elevator to the rooftop pool and get a bird’s-eye view of what Cartagena has to offer.

From the infinity pool, cocktail in hand, you’ll see the high-rises of Bocagrande, just across the water and spy the clock tower entrance to the colonial walled city that is home to historical districts El Centro and San Diego; only five minutes away yet a world apart.  Their Red Knife restaurant is a great choice for lunch or dinner, but our favorite place to hang out is the pool.

Day or night, you’re bound to have a great time at this hotel. This should be very obvious, but…Hotel Chocolat lives by its name and every evening at turndown, fresh chocolate balls are left in your room and they are almost as delectable as the one you receive at check-in.

As with many hotels in Cartagena, there’s more than meets the eye here.  Behind the grand front doors of the hotel, a world of modern amenities, friendly staff and warm hospitality awaits.

Le Guanahani – St. Barths

0

The largest hotel on St. Barth has only 67 rooms, and at Le Guanahani they are anything but simply ‘rooms’. Each is unique yet equally stunning, from suites to cottages nestled along the hillsides on the 18 acres of tropical paradise overlooking two magnificent beaches.

Nearly all of the rooms have an ocean view, and 14 ultra-swanky villas have their own private pool. Bartolomeo for dinner overlooks koi ponds nestled in the forest, while the beachfront Indigo touts a poolside bar and the freshest afternoon fare for when patrons wish to relax in the shade. With its own bay on the Grand Cul de Sac Beach, Le Guanahani is one of the only spots on the island that maintains cool breezes as well as perfectly flat water, the perfect conditions for windsurfing, kiteboarding, kayaking and paddleboarding.

For more relaxation there is also the onsite Spa My Blend by Clarins with its own tranquil pool and plenty of Paris style. For sport there’s no better place for exercise than the oceanfront fitness center and two tennis courts on the property. Celebrating its 30th year with the completion of a 4 year, $40 million resort wide enhancement project, it’s never been a better time to relax and enjoy all of the Swankiest treats that this chic French island has to offer!

Lastarria Hotel – Santiago, Chile

0

The Singular Santiago, Lastarria Hotel is a hip and upscale coupling of neoclassic French architecture and early modern 20th century style. In the sophisticated city of Santiago, this property is right at home. When you are in between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean you’re competing with natural beauty and tempting escapes, but Santiago holds its own with a wealth of things to see and do.

We love staying at this property because of its timeless atmosphere reflective of the cultural and artistic character of iconic buildings in Lastarria, a historic neighborhood in the center of Santiago. The Museum of Fine Arts, The Museum of Visual Arts and the Gabriela Mistral Center are all easily accessible from the hotel, if you want to leave.
The hotel blends seamlessly into the surrounding barrio, with interiors that pay homage to past centuries. Striking doorways mark the transition from public to private areas, bearing esemblances to those you may see as you wander the winding streets of the city.

Charm, sophistication, allure and swank are all woven into the details of this wonderful hotel. Explore where these doors lead and find ones that culminate in an outdoor terrace, offering spectacular views of the Parque Forestal, and the historic and culturally significant buildings that make up the city’s landscape. All the amenities of any well-appointed hotel can be found here. Intimate dining options are available directly in the lobby.

Seating only 70 guests, the restaurant’s style is classic and elegant. With a primarily French and seasonal menu but also serves traditional dishes such as liebre a la royal, foie gras and canard á la presse, as well as local specialties such as chañaral, penca, arope, hedgehogs, guanaco and black edged oysters from Chiloe. Lunch here is casual-yet-sophisticated.

Worth the trip when visiting Chile!

The Singluar Patagonia Hotel

0

We find ourselves traveling outside the obvious as much as we can and here we are in a post-Victorian cold-storage plant built in 1915, smack in the middle of Patagonia. The hotel is called The Singluar, Patagonia – Puerto Bories Hotel. It’s hard to get much cooler than this. Not far from downtown Puerto Natales, less than 2.5 miles , Puerto Bories was a town created by the Sociedad Explotadora de Tierra del Fuego a sheep meat and wool processing plant. This focus is known as a “frigorifico” The hotel is located in the converted “Frigorifico Puerto Bories”. Very cool!

This industrial complex was originally built to process and export the frozen meat to Europe. The sheep came from all over Patagonia. The factory was in operation for 70 years, generating work and contributing to the development of the region. After a lengthy period of neglect, the building was restored to its former industrial grandeur and as a result
of the meticulous conservation, was declared a National Monument in 1996.

The owners, whose ancestors were among the pioneers who worked at the plant, had a brilliant idea. They not only wanted to return the building to its former glory, but they wanted to add a twist: transforming it into the finest and most unique luxury hotel in Patagonia. We say they’ve succeeded in doing just that. The Victorian engine room, the tannery, the blacksmith shop, all meticulously restored. As you wend your way through the resort, you’ll find constant reminders of an industrial past.

These are reflections of a different time, when risk-takers came to Patagonia to start a new life in an untamed land. Singular’s celebration of heritage; bringing Patagonia’s proud past back to life is an art form worth the trek to these parts of South America. You’ll be spoiled for choice between excursions, glimpses of history, fine dining and the unparalleled displays put on by Mother Nature.

Boats, horseback riding, trekking, kayaking, fly-fishing and mountain biking. Palates are sure to be tempted and tantalized as Chef Pasqualetto re-imagines traditional, regional recipes; fully respectful of the area’s culture and its rich by-products using only locally grown and fresh ingredients. The cocktail barinvites us indulge ourselves, relax and share experiences in the warmth of a fireplace, savoring some of the best wines Chile has to offer. Get here!

Find Yourself in Puerto Rico

0

St. Regis Bahia Beach

It’s balmy, breezy, full of spice and swankier than ever.  This is Puerto Rico and it will charm and embrace you.  It’s no secret that from the narrow streets of Old San Juan, you can find the essence of what the island used to be.  The history among the cobblestones and vendors, the bustle of the big city only moments away, but to be transformed and to find yourself, you’ve got to see this.  Not just one butler, but a team who are here to meet your every need, iron an outfit a day and simply pamper you to bits. Puerto Rico is brimming with diverse aspects of itself, from coast to coast, but I like what I discovered at the St. Regis Bahia Beach very, very much. I landed in San Juan and expected to be met and taken to the hotel, but what happened next was an elevating experience.  My St. Regis driver was awaiting my approach at the luggage carousel.  He knew my flight had landed and waited expectantly for me, and on this day, it was I alone in the luxury car.  He grabbed my bag, never flinching from the warmth of the afternoon, in his black suit and tie.  As he whisked me away, feeling very much like a superstar at this point– to the awaiting black car with its reclining leather seats and massaging widgets. Not my every day mode of transportation, but it felt quite welcoming. I adjusted my footrest to just the right height and we were already underway.  What on earth more could a proper arrival look like, if not this?  At this point he could have taken me all around the island and I would have been just as relaxed and open to explore. If the reception at the airport is this good, I didn’t think the resort could top it. I figured it would be on par with this experience but to top it, that didn’t need to happen, but it did. I found myself surprised, yet again.

Met by bell captains, staff bearing cold towels, another set offering refreshing beverage choices and yet others to simply greet me an escort me to the Plantation House where all my registration details were on file and simply needed my review and approval. This topped the arrival at the airport.  I was then met by my butler and taken away to the suite.  This visit I was overlooking the lush gardens filled with tropical foliage that buffered the pool from the beach.  The low-impact luxury feel was all around. Attention to detail, genuine smiles, hospitable service, an effort to go above and beyond and sabered champagne every evening at 6 pm are all to be expected on any given day at the St. Regis. I found myself expecting these services after only one day at the resort, and was never disappointed. From the beach bar called The Spot, where I had my first ever Avocado Margarita, which didn’t sound like something one would rush to order, I found myself pleasantly surprised and ordered two!.  The cocktail came out of a little competition on a slow day at the beach bar.  The bartenders decided to see what they could come up with; armed only with ingredients they had on hand. They took a tried and true recipe, kicked things up a notch and came up with this rich and creamy concoction of deliciousness. They are very creative at this beach bar!

Adriatic
Escape

0

Because I had it on good authority how serious Belgrade’s party scene was, my plan for the Adriatic was to begin my three location stay there with a spot of city-based celebration and follow that with a lot of what I will call serious recreation, likely termed “Recovery” by others, regardless of terminology, fantastic is the only way I can describe my stay in the region.

With my destinations, schedule and attitude set, I move on to the Karisma Hotel Group’s website for accommodations because with their variety of property types and a history of luxury, three hotels in three very different places is just what I need.

Peru
The Amazon

0

Cruising down the Amazon in what is more of a yacht than what one imagines a cruise to be. Delfin cruise lines operate three boats on this river we have all come to know from movies, the news or other sources. Few of us have managed to actually set foot in this region and experience its beauty and reality and I think it is because it is so painfully poor and outside the pale of what we would instantly consider a holiday. Ah, but Delfin is here to share their Amazon experience with you and they will be sharing it in fine style. I was aboard Delfin I, the most intimate of the three vessels. Delfin I has only 4 stately staterooms, two of which come with their own plunge pool. These rooms put any ordinary ‘cabin’ to shame. With floor to ceiling glass walls, windows that frame the most inspiring sense of nature and the richness of your interior surroundings makes this cruise down the amazon more than appealing. The staff to guest ratio is approximately two to one, leaving very little room for any of us to go without first rate attention to detail and service. Twice a day I had the most interesting artwork on my bed. The staff came in to not only attend to the room but created very special towel art upon every visit. These characters ranged from oversized bunnies to people lounging with one leg crossed on top of the other, as if they were statuary, enjoying the view from my bed. Not expecting this creative touch, my first day, I ended up laughing out loud – ok, maybe snorting a little as well.

Getting to the boat was almost as much of an enjoyable experience as it was to set sail down the Amazon. The first class treatment began as I landed in Lima and was driven by chauffer to the JW Marriott for a quick overnight stay. The hotel was impressive and although only there for a few hours of sleep, I can say it’s was an elegant welcome to South America. My room overlooked the Pacific and was high enough to see right into Peru’s infamous fog at this time of the year. June seems to always bring this thick cloud of water droplets to the skyline of Lima. I liked it. For me, the mystery of fog adds a bit of romance to any trip.

Jumby Bay – Exclusively inclusive

0

I like things that are only accessible by boat. There’s something romantic, mysterious and obviously secluded about it. Only two miles off the coast of mainland Antigua is such a place. Jumby Bay is brimming with Rosewood’s sensibility and an unmistakable sense of place.

To say that this is laidback luxury at its finest would not be doing it justice. There are absolutely no room keys to your suites. No cars here, no other hotels, no jet skis, hair braiders, and absolutely no hint of urban intrusion.

There are, however, claw-foot tubs in the garden, shower inside and out, private outdoor sitting areas in front and back of your suite that sits directly on the beachfront, and these are just the suites. The island also offers full villas ranging from modestly sized luxurious homes to those that take your breath away due to their size and design.

The luxury side of The Galapagos

0

Pikaia Lodge

Mention The Galapagos Islands and you’ll incite the expected conversations about Charles Darwin, evolution, giant tortoises and even a geography lesson on where the islands are actually located. What you won’t expect? A luxury resort with one of the lightest carbon footprints of any hotel on earth.

The Galapagos Islands were slow to be discovered because of their isolated position 600 miles off the coast of South America. Even today, my journey took the better part of 24 hours – but somehow, it made the trip feel that much more like an exotic expedition. This was my chance to follow in Darwin’s footsteps to understand the theories that his visit inspired – and ultimately changed the way we human beings see ourselves and the world around us.

Land on The Galapagos Islands is fiercely preserved, with 97% of the land area is designated a national park. Traditionally, visitors have explored this region by yacht or small-scale cruise ship, as this was long considered the best way to maximize sightseeing and wildlife-viewing. However, the thought of spending a life-changing trip within the confines of small cruise ship seemed, well, less than ideal. Thankfully, the recent introduction of luxury lodge, Pikaia Lodge, is changing the game in The Galapagos.

Perched atop two extinct volcanoes on the main island of Santa Cruz, Pikaia Lodge is an intimate 14-room getaway offering 360-degree views of the vast, churning Pacific Ocean.

Guests arrive via private car, which snakes up a tree-lined driveway to reveal and the architecturally dramatic lodge in all its glory: a clean, modern style with oversized glass panes; large, arched oblong white walls, and endless open-air common spaces fusing the indoors with the magnificent outdoor landscape.

Evolution is the theme woven throughout with the lodge, from the aptly named Evolution restaurant to the outdoor DNA bar. An inviting Homo Sapiens Explorers Lounge offers nature documentaries about the Galapagos nightly. While light in its carbon footprint, Pikaia doesn’t skimp on comfort; guests enjoy access to an intimate spa, state-of-the-art gym and infinity pool with views any luxury hotel in the world would be hard-pressed to beat.

What sets Pikaia apart from other nearby hotels is its mix of land and sea excursions, the latter provided on its private dedicated yacht, M/V Pikaia I. I booked included a hybrid itinerary of land- and water-based adventures to spot The Galapagos’ version of the “big five” – the giant Galapagos tortoise, blue-footed boobies, frigates, sea lions and penguins.

Our first excursion sailed to North Seymour Island, where we spotted iguanas and frigates before changing into our wetsuits to snorkel around the area. Nearby, our guide led us to a beach where we spotted nesting sea turtles, marine iguanas, flamingos and hundreds of Sally Lightfoot crabs.

The next day was dedicated exclusively to the giant Galapagos tortoise, which was a highlight on the trip. We hiked around the island to watch them in their various habitats and captured what seemed like a million pictures before we ended at the nearby Charles Darwin Research Station to learn about their work in further studying Darwin’s theory of evolution.

Every day at Pikaia was filled with adventure – from exploring the lava fields of Bartolome to hiking Pinnacle Rock (the Galapagos’ version of the Leaning Tower of Pisa). The ocean excursions also gave rise to some of the most unforgettable moments of the trip – snorkeling with sea lions and the infamous Galapagos penguin who darted playfully around us, blissfully free from fear.

It was in these moments where I understood why humans must travel to better understand the world around us. In just a few days, the Galapagos Islands were able to turn a simple traveler like myself into a budding naturalist…just like Darwin.

Letter from Africa, Zambia

0

I arrived in Livingstone, Zambia not knowing what to expect. I was there to see the famed waterfalls, Victoria Falls, but I didn’t know what other adventures were in store for me.

While Livingstone is a small, unassuming town in Zambia’s Southern Province, it’s full of charm and the perfect place to embark on African adventures one can only dream of.  Since Zambia is surrounded by eight countries (Zimbabwe, Namibia, Angola, Tanzania, Mozambique, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Malawi), it’s a great launching point to venture into more African countries.  From Livingstone alone, you can access four countries and take advantage of the many activities offered.

It wasn’t easy to figure out what to do during my short time there but I decided on a safari day trip.  After a short boat ride, I arrived in Botswana, ready to go on a once-in-a-lifetime safari at Chobe National Park.  Elephants, buffalos, hippos, and kudus galore, a safari through Chobe National Park is an animal lovers’ dream.  We spent the morning in a modified Land Cruiser, driving through the park trying to find as many animals as we could.  After lunch at the Chobe Safari Lodge, we embarked on an afternoon river safari, where we found more animals in their natural habitats.  Who knew watching elephants eat grass could be so entertaining?

Livingstone is also home to Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Victoria Falls is a spectacularly breathtaking waterfall that’s over 300 feet in depth and a mile in width.  It’s shared by both Zambia and Zimbabwe and since it’s very easy to cross the border, I decided to also visit the Zimbabwean side the next day.  And I’m so glad I did.  Each side offers a different view and perspective of this spectacular waterfall. I couldn’t help but to be in awe of Mother Nature and all her glory. It’s no wonder Victoria Falls is nicknamed “Mosi-oa-Tunya” or “the smoke that thunders.”

After viewing both sides of the Falls, I went back to my hotel, The Royal Livingstone, and relaxed with a glass of South African rose.  Zambia’s only 5-star resort, The Royal Livingstone, is located directly in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, so Victoria Falls is only a short 10-minute walk away.  Each room has its own private veranda, making it easy to take in the majestic property grounds. Animals roam the grounds freely, so I wasn’t surprised to see zebras and giraffes grazing for their meals at dusk . I guess it’s safe to say that in Livingstone, you don’t have to go on a safari to see animals! With a beautiful courtyard, spa, excellent service, and a magnificent view of the Zambezi River, there’s no better place to stay in Livingstone than at The Royal Livingstone. It’s African luxury done right.

I highly recommend traveling to Livingstone, Zambia if you want to go off the beaten-path and make all of your African dreams come true.
