Swellegant Stays: Over the Moon, La Plagne

La Plagne is the most popular ski resort in the world, but for one blissful night you can have an entire mountainside to yourself. Over the Moon — which opened on January 15 for the 2017/18 ski season — is the world’s first snow groomer hote. And as it says on the side, “Ce qu’il se passe à 2,000m, reste à 2,000m” (“What happens at 2,000m, stays at 2,000m”).

The experience begins with a chauffeur driven Jaguar transfer to Plagne-Bellecôte, the groomer’s daytime base. Once the ski lifts close for the day and darkness falls, you’ll have an exhilarating ride up the mountain on the groomer to a plateau at 2,400m with panoramic views of the French Alps. Your driver will leave you here, returning to collect you the following morning.

Over the Moon is compact but cosy: exactly what you want for a romantic night with the one you love. Inside there’s a queen size bed with luxurious faux fur throws, a home cinema and high quality surround sound system, and of course there is central heating. The mini bar is pre stocked with French Champagne and macaroons, and you’ll also get a “Love Box” filled with surprises.

It’s tempting to spend the entire night in the groomer, but well worth venturing outside. Not only will you have the silent beauty of the mountains all around you, but alongside the groomer is a permanent structure containing your private spa. Soak in the jacuzzi as you drink the Champagne, then maybe even roll in the snow and make snow angels: up here, no one is watching!

With the entire universe spread out in the sky above you, on a clear night Over the Moon really is a 1,000 star hotel.
