Elevating all things water…

0

Tea Fortē encourages us to steep with elegance. Tea Over Ice®, elevating iced tea to a higher level. Only Tea Fortē could transform a cool glass of iced tea into an entertaining event. Authentic iced tea is steeped and flash-chilled moments before you drink it in their sculpturally designed, heat resistant Steep & Chill™ Pitcher Set. Each of their five iced tea blends are artisan crafted to deliver unparalleled iced refreshment any day of the year, but especially refreshing in the summer. Iced Ginger Pear, Iced Mango Peach, Iced Blood Orange, and Iced Ceylon Gold have us drooling. Without water, iced tea would be impossible.  Stay thirsty…Tea Fortē has got you covered.

The flavor composition of each tea is on the verge of ingenious. Iced Mango Peach – adds peppermint to the mango and peach duo giving that unexpected freshness to such summery flavors in a green tea base. Another favorite of ours is the blackberry leaves and lemon balm that is added to the white tea base that makes up the Iced Ginger Pear. The choices are all so refreshing that it’s hard to choose. Grab all 5 and this stylish and swanky brewing glass set. You will be sipping in style all year long, but start now, start this summer, and transform your water and elevate your style.

Letter from Europe – Verona, Italy

Letter from Europe – Verona, Italy

Two households, both alike in dignity,

In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,

From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,

Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.

Buongiorno,

Whether you studied the play in school, or watched Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes fall hopelessly in love on the big screen, the tragedy of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has burnt a hole in our collective consciousness. I’m sat writing in the courtyard of Palazzo Victoria, just a few blocks away from the 13th century house of Dal Cappello — the infamous Capulets. Every day, hundreds of star struck lovers crowd into the courtyard or call plaintively to one another from Juliet’s balcony. It is said that if you touch Juliet’s statue you will find the love of your life; true or not, the bronze statue is polished to a shine across its chest, so clearly no one is taking their chances.

Verona is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its history and culture predate the Montagues and the Capulets by more than 1,500 years. Palazzo Verona is itself built on the top of Roman ruins: you can see the remains of the walls, still standing after two millennia, through glass panels in the stone floors, and explore them on a subterranean tour with Veronality. The history here is revealed to guests layer by layer. The Roman parts are the oldest, but turn a corner or climb a staircase and you’re likely to come upon medieval frescoes one minute and contemporary furniture by Gaetano Pesce, the unquestioned Maestro of Italian design, the next. Palazzo Victoria is as much a museum as it is a hotel.

The courtyard, cool and shady beneath broad, cream parasols, the oversized house plants creating a green oasis in the urban environment, is completely hidden from the street and thus wonderfully quiet. I have been here since mid morning, first sipping on the best Italian espresso, then lazily segueing into a drawn out lunch. At the restaurant, Borsari 36, Executive Chef Carmine Calo has created a menu which, while true to its Veronese roots, catapults the local ingredients and flavours into the modern day. I fell head over heels in love with the taste of the buffalo mozzarella risotto with green peas and pork belly, and with the innovative presentation of the tiramisu in two layers of a silver moka pot. The single raspberry stood out vividly against the burnished metal.

With such decadence on my plate, it will certainly be necessary to spend a few hours of what’s left of the afternoon walking it off. Thankfully, Palazzo Victoria is in the heart of the Old Town, with every street presenting something new. I’ve already marvelled at the Porta Borsari, a 2,000 year old limestone gateway resplendent with Corinthian capitals, and admired the diverse architecture in the Piazza delle Erbe, the site of the Roman forum. But I’m saving the best to last. Tomorrow night, Bob Dylan is performing live in Verona Arena, the city’s Roman amphitheatre. One of the best preserved structures of its kind, 15,000 spectators can still sit in the round, witnessing the spectacles on stage. In the summer months, the world’s greatest opera singers cause the ancient stones to reverberate with the strengths of their voices; let’s see if the Nobel laureate has similarly impressive vocal power.

Letter from Miami Beach

Como Metropolitan Miami Beach

Dear Self,

The days in Miami are warm and the air is thick. The water here is as you might expect, warm and blue. We made a good choice to come and stay at the Como. The renovated Art Deco hotel tugs at the child in me. As soon as the bellman showed me to my room, the terrazzo flooring that was such a popular choice in South Florida in years gone by, spoke to me. I had to slip off my shoes and stand with my bare feet to feel that special cooling feeling that only this floor can give. The hipness of the room itself made all of me feel super cool. Pastel green walls, set off by grey trim and drapery, created a sanctuary. The stark white bed and rocking chair acted as punctuation marks to a statement that read, “You will relax.” The tufted leather armoire and three-tiered light fixture were simple touches of luxe. My goal was to follow the edict to relax. I came for the hydrotherapy on the roof and that was my first stop.

The rooftop spa was my second stop, if I am being honest. I had to make my way to the Met Pool Restaurant and Bar for the famed cucumber colada. Sans alcohol, this is a perfect spa elixir. It is a light green piña colada, laced with mint, cucumber and secret green additions that refresh and cleanse. I sipped this by the pool that is intimately tucked between the sand and the hotel. If I had not made alternate plans, I could have sat here all day. With my last sip of colada having been taken, I was off to the spa terrace for a nice lunch, pacing myself before heading out by the hydrotherapy pool. Once I finished lunch, I was up there on deck with viewsof the Atlantic Ocean as the jets released what they needed to release and the pounding cascade of water took me to another place entirely. This hydrotherapy experience is unique as they have found a way to harness the curative powers of water while coupling it with nature’s show of her own magnificence when it comes to water. Talk about mind and body connection! This spacious rooftop hydrotherapy is open to guests 24/7.

Self, you made a great choice. Now to grab the yoga mat from the suite and come back up for sunset elf-guided yoga and another plunge into this watery world of relaxation and elimination.

Fun fact: yoga mats are placed in each suite for guests to use during their stay. Can you say, self-love on vacation? I can.

Namaste,

Gina Hines

Letter from Africa – Okavango Delta, Botswana

0

Dumela rra! Or, to any ladies reading this, dumela mma.

I’m in the southern African country of Botswana, and although there are more than 20 languages spoken here, I’ve settled on greeting you in the national one, Setswana. Thankfully, English is an official language, too.

Botswana is the most exclusive safari destination in Africa; consequently it’s also the most expensive. The country is sparsely populated, and understandably the local people want to keep their pristine ecosystems as wild and beautiful as they can be, allowing the incredibly rich wildlife around them to flourish. Like Bhutan, half a world away, the government is therefore deliberately pursuing a strategy of low volume, high value tourism. Visit Botswana and they’ll make sure you have an extraordinary time, but you can’t do it on the cheap.

I’m visiting Botswana to experience firsthand three of the new safari camps which have opened here in the past year. Each of them takes the concept of “camping” to new levels of luxury, but what I’m most interested in is the way which they immerse guests in remote  wildernesses. It’s the possibility of solitude, the peace you find when you are hours away from anywhere, and the concentration and proximity of some of the mightiest creatures on earth — African elephant, white rhino, and lion — that make Botswana such an extraordinary destination and well worth every penny.

The camps, each one in their own private concession within a game reserve or national park in the Okavango Delta, are best accessed by light aircraft. The tiny planes bump along on the thermals, often not that far above the trees, but with this birds’ eye view I not only see the elephant herds from above — something truly magical — but also get a sense of the terrain. In the Delta, the line between water and land is blurred, even during the dry season.

First stop is Gomoti Plains Camp, which lies alongside a natural water channel. From the deck of my tent, I can see a giraffe ambling by, and a kudu (a large antelope) temporarily blocks the path before skittishly taking flight. Last year 33 white rhino where relocated here from South Africa by Rhinos Without Borders — an ambitious initiative to protect them from poachers — so there is a significant of seeing them, too.

With only a handful of guests staying at Gomoti Plains at any one time, there’s a good chance that you’ll get a guide to yourself. Mott enthralled me with his stories of the bush, had a detailed knowledge of the Delta’s flora and fauna, and was a most hospitable host when he stopped the Land Cruiser to serve me the nightly sundowner (in my case a cold G&T).

As the crow flies, it’s only a short hop from Gomoti Plains to Rra Dinare, but the water is a formidable natural barrier, so I flew. The water channels dominate the landscape here, so it bridges away with game drives, replacing the usual safari 4×4 with a dug out mokoro canoe.

The pace of travel — and life in general — is slower from a canoe. The only sound is the mapping of the water against the boat and the occasional squawk of the water birds. Early in the morning, before the day becomes hot, is the best time for exploring, just as the birds and animals are waking up and they come to the water’s edge to drink.

Last and most impressive is Sable Alley, Natural Selection’s latest property. The central lodge is a palatial structure rooted in thatch but open on three sides so that the breeze blows through and the views are unhindered. A watering hole packed with grunting hippos sits right in front of the camp; you can watch them whilst taking a cooling dip in the infinity, or sat on the deck with a cold glass of South African wine in one hand.

It’s the wildlife sightings which really excite me. All the big five — rhino, elephant, buffalo, lion, and leopard — are present in good numbers, and so too are rare African wild dog, jackal, warthog, and even cheetah. Every moment of the day, from before dawn until well after nightfall, I’m seeing and learning something new. I’m immersed in the incredible, unspoilt beauty of the Delta, a rare chance to step away from man made environments and to revel in the peace of paradise. If you, too, want to experience a pristine wilderness, the Okavango Delta is the place to come.

Wishing you were here,

Sophie

Swellegant Stays: Over the Moon, La Plagne

0

La Plagne is the most popular ski resort in the world, but for one blissful night you can have an entire mountainside to yourself. Over the Moon — which opened on January 15 for the 2017/18 ski season — is the world’s first snow groomer hote. And as it says on the side, “Ce qu’il se passe à 2,000m, reste à 2,000m” (“What happens at 2,000m, stays at 2,000m”).

The experience begins with a chauffeur driven Jaguar transfer to Plagne-Bellecôte, the groomer’s daytime base. Once the ski lifts close for the day and darkness falls, you’ll have an exhilarating ride up the mountain on the groomer to a plateau at 2,400m with panoramic views of the French Alps. Your driver will leave you here, returning to collect you the following morning.

Over the Moon is compact but cosy: exactly what you want for a romantic night with the one you love. Inside there’s a queen size bed with luxurious faux fur throws, a home cinema and high quality surround sound system, and of course there is central heating. The mini bar is pre stocked with French Champagne and macaroons, and you’ll also get a “Love Box” filled with surprises.

It’s tempting to spend the entire night in the groomer, but well worth venturing outside. Not only will you have the silent beauty of the mountains all around you, but alongside the groomer is a permanent structure containing your private spa. Soak in the jacuzzi as you drink the Champagne, then maybe even roll in the snow and make snow angels: up here, no one is watching!

With the entire universe spread out in the sky above you, on a clear night Over the Moon really is a 1,000 star hotel.

Swellegant Stays: Matetsi River Lodge, Zimbabwe

0

Now that Zimbabwe has finally broken free from the clutches of Robert Mugabe, the country is set for a tourism boom. Ready and waiting, and superbly situated both for wildlife safaris in the Zambezi National Park and epic sightseeing at Victoria Falls, is the stunning Matetsi River Lodge, one of the finest contemporary properties in Zimbabwe.

Matetsi River Lodge’s 18 suites — each one an expansive, self contained villa — all overlook the Zambezi River. Buffalo and elephant do wander into the camp, and there’s always something happening on the water, so you can wildlife watch straight from your deck or whilst taking a dip in the outdoor plunge pool.

The lodge’s design is exceptionally fresh, with imaginative touches from the copper clad bar in the lounge to the deep, round baths, the chandelier made of vintage Dinky Toys in the vaulted wine cellar to the cow skin rugs in the suites. Natural materials — wood and stone in particular — feature prominently, a reminder that the natural wilderness of the Matetsi Private Game Reserve surrounds you.

The same creativity extends to the menu, which changes daily: I sat at a lantern lit table by the river feasting on unexpectedly delicious crocodile ceviche, accompanied by a glass of crisp South African white wine.
